Mercy College Internship
Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction. -John C. Crosby
The Youth Council began a college internship program in the spring of 2017 in conjunction with Mercy College. This program accepts a student volunteer to act as a playground liason at Hillside Elementary School to help mentor students during recess, to mediate any problems or issues, and to encourage inclusive behaviors. This student also helps with the after-school program at the James V. Harmon Community Center assisting with Homework Help and developing relationships with the children who are regular participants.
The intern is chosen and supervised by one of the Council's board members who is a practicing psychologist. This program has not only benefited the Hastings schools and Hastings village but is also a valuable resource for Mercy College to offer their students an opportunity to gain practical, specialized skills in their field of interest.
